It Gets Better: Celebrity Couple Comes Out!
A guest blog, by Jason E. Maurer
I arranged a meeting with Trevor Harper and Nathan Parker, the stars of my novel “Trust and Love”. They were drinking Dom Perignon when I arrived at our arranged meeting place in room number 608 of the Ritz-Carlton in New York City.
Upon my arrival, Nathan offered a glass of the expensive champagne and suggested I take a seat at the writing desk in the lounge area of the spacious suite.
Jason E. Maurer [sitting at the desk and taking a sip of bubbly]: Thank you, this stuff is amazing!
Nathan Parker: You’ve never had champagne?
JM: Yes, but not the stuff that comes in $300 bottles.
Trevor Harper [speaking with his amazing Deep South accent]: It’s amazing. I’ve been hooked since the first time I had the pleasure of trying it.
JM: As I recall, you drank nearly two bottles that night.
TH: You should know, you wrote the story yourself. [He sits down on the three-seat sofa, perched elegantly against the right armrest, one leg bent at the knee over the other]
JM: Indeed I did, and I’m pleased you two accepted my request for a meeting. It’s great being able to sit down for a real conversation.
NP [Sits next to Trevor, and the two hold hands]: You’re always so busy working on your other novels.
TH: Jason, you must devote your time to a sequel.
JM: A sequel of your story?
TH: Of course.
JM: But the novel has only been out for a few weeks.
TH: Our lives are interesting enough, don’t you think?
JM: I’ll give it some thought. What do your fans think of your story being published?
NP: Trevor’s fans have always been supportive of our relationship. The story gives them a chance to go behind-the-scenes of our lives, the highs and lows, love, and our happy-ever-after ending.
TH: Don’t give away too much, Nathan. We still want people to go out and buy the novel.
NP: You’re right. Ok, the novel is not a happy-ever-after, it’s a.... ooh, it’s a surprise ending!
JM: Your fans won’t like you telling fibs, Nathan.
TH [waving around his left hand]: Nathan has an odd sense of humor, but I still love him.
JM [Realizes that Trevor’s left ring-finger is sparkling in the light]: Are you wearing a diamond?
TH [smiles]: Yes, Nathan surprised me at midnight as we started 2012. Of course I said yes!
JM: That’s wonderful. Congratulations! I’m so happy for you both. When is the wedding?
TH: We haven’t decided yet.
NP: But we have agreed that you are going to make our wedding cake.
TH: Yes, and it should look like that one picture on your website of the chocolate-frosted one with the basket-weaving and red roses (www.silverberryweddingcakes.com)
JM: I would be honored. [Nathan refills everyone’s glasses, and we all enjoy a toast to the engagement before I continue asking questions] Have your lives changed since the novel debuted?
TH: Not really. I’ve been working hard on the new record and haven’t had much time for anything else.
NP: And I stay at home taking care of the dogs. Our neighbors think it’s great having a celebrity in the neighborhood.
TH: They’re crazy.
NP: They aren’t crazy, just a bit... eccentric.
TH: Take if from me, they are nuts.
NP: Why do you say that?
TH: Because last week while you were at the store...
JM [clears throat]: Excuse me, gentlemen. Can we get back to the interview?
TH: Oh, of course.
NP: Sorry.
JM: How are things going with your charity?
TH: Excellent!
NP: Everyone is extremely generous and we’ve raised so much money. It’s nice to know there are still good people in this world.
JM: How is Cody since his ‘incident’?
TH: He’s doing well. I’m so glad we were able to help him overcome his issues at school.
NP: He’s a wonderful, bright young man and I’m glad his parents found him in time to save him from the overdose. I can’t imagine being in his shoes. He was tormented so badly in school, and it’s sad when anyone thinks suicide is the answer to everything. If he succeeded in killing himself, we would never have met him. He deserves special recognition for his bravery.
JM: All those unfortunate teenagers, lost to the world because they felt they couldn’t survive the hostile world of high school. There must be something more we can do to help.
TH [wiping away tears]: It breaks my heart. No one should feel worthless because there is always someone to talk to.
NP: Each life is precious, and every person should know that we are here to listen to their problems.
TH: It does get better.
NP: Jason, you should interview Cody.
JM: I’ve already arranged that. We meet later this week.
TH: Good idea.
JM: Thank you. All right, Nathan, what exactly did you do at your last job, before you quit to travel the world with Trevor? In the novel, you only mentioned your work in passing and never told us exactly what it was you did.
NP: Why is everyone so interested in that part of my life?
TH: He was a secret agent for the CIA.
NP: No way, I wouldn’t want to work for the government!
TH: Same.
NP: I worked for one of those fancy fashion magazines.
TH: You’re lying again.
NP: Yes, sorry. I didn’t really enjoy my job so let’s just leave it at that.
JM: Fair enough. One final question before we go. Trevor, when is the new record coming out?
TH: Soon. Hopefully sometime in the spring.
JM: Thanks guys, I had a wonderful time. Who knows, maybe I’ll write that sequel after all.
NP: That would be fun.
TH: And even though you’re the one who created us, please don’t let us die or cheat on each other. Keep our story a happy one, and not sad or depressing like some of your other novels.
JM [laughs]: I’ll give it some thought, but I’m not promising anything.
